Writing Focus: Jupiter

We have been learning about space this term. This week was J week in Room Tekau mā whā.
We listened to a song and watched an informational video to learn lots of facts about Jupiter. Then we were ready to write. Here are the steps to writing in our class.
  • make a picture plan with labels
  • write our story, try to spell new words by saying them slowly and writing down the sounds we can hear - underline words we need help with
  • use a red pen to edit the story - look for capital letters, full stops and check spelling using the work mat or dictionary
  • use a red pen to revise the writing - change some words for more interesting words or rewrite a sentence in a more interesting way
  • share the story with a buddy
  • conference with the teacher to get help with the things we can't fix by ourselves
Here is one example - some of us could write lots and lots of facts about Jupiter!

Peacocks and Purple People Eaters

Have you heard about the purple people eater who came to Earth? We listened to the words of the song and thought about it would look like.

"It was a one eyed, one horned, flying, purple people eater."

It said that it only eats purple people. We earthlings should be totally safe!

We made stand up peacocks with beautiful tails. We learned that the male peacock is the colourful bird. The female is mostly brown with a much smaller tail.

Meet our Monsters

We have designed our monster masks. Can you tell who we are?

Into Space with Our Geometric Shaped Rockets

We have been learning about shapes and space this term.

Elena filmed us making rocket pictures. We traced around some shapes and cut out the pieces we needed for our rockets. The rockets are going to the silvery moon made form a circle shape. We also learned another way to make stars.

Here are our space paintings.
We had to change our plans several times when we made our planets - the first way we tried to make the colourful circles didn't work. We needed a Plan B and C!
The finished artworks were worth the stress of the problem solving, and look awesome on our wall.

Matariki Stars

We have been learning about Matariki and what a special time it is.
We are also learning about shapes and geometry in maths.
We combined the two topics to create our Matariki stars.... and we even learned how to use a ruler while we were doing it!
