Buddy Readers

We have big buddies from Room 2 come and read with us every week. They listen to us read our reading books  - the more we read the better readers we become! Big thanks to our fantastic reading buddies for helping us.

Waiata - Kahikatea

The tamariki of Room Tekau mā whā want to share our version of this song.

We learned that the kahikatea tree comes from the time of the jurassic dinosaurs. It can grow up to 55 meters high and can live for over 500 hundred years. It is a type of native pine with strange cone with seeds that are very pretty and tasty. You can see them in our video. The maori people used the tress for making spears and making pigment for moko.

All about K

This week we learned about lots of native birds that start with the letter K. We found out that many of them are endangered. How may native birds that start with K do you know?

Kung Fu Jump Jam!
Every Friday we join the other Team Waka classes and Rooms 12 and 13 for a fun Jump Jam fitness session. It is such fun!

Kites,  Kites, Kites

We designed our own kites and tested them out on the netball court. We had to tie our own knots - this was quite a challenge but we got there! We found out the Knot is a K word too!

About Space - an Astronaut Visit.

Our topic for this term is space. We had a real live astronaut visit Team Waka.
Half of Room 14 joined Room 18 and half joined Room 9 to find out about being an astronaut. We tried on space suits and we even made our own rockets!

Helicopters

This week we learned about helicopters and hovercrafts and their similarities and differences. We made simple helicopters and took them outside to see if they would fly.
Zain made his own design 3D helicopter - it was amazing.

Here we are flying our helicopters - it was very noisy - just not quite the same noise as a real helicopter!

Here are some more fun and games from this week...

Our butterflies

Here are the butterflies we promised you last week. We made them from the outline of half a butterfly. It was a lot of work to make the shape, colours and patterns symmetrical but we did it. As the sign says... If you try, you can fly!

Bubbles and Butterflies

This week was B week. We used maths and science to learn about things that start with B.

Here are our symmetrical butterflies that can flap their wings gently and pretend to fly.
We had to colour both sides exactly the same.
Next we tried making our own butterfly designs. We had a half butterfly shape. We folded the paper in half to cut out both sides at the same time so we had a symmetrical butterfly shape.

We added paint spots to one side and folded our butterfly in half again to make sure the spots were exactly the same on both sides. Our butterflies are nearly ready. We will show them to you next week.

We also got into groups to do an experiment with bubbles - we made bouncing sultanas and raisins.
